To celebrate today’s International Women’s Day we’re taking a look at some of the ace women within the North family. As a company we are incredibly proud to say that 44% of our overall employees are female, with this figure rising to 55% when looking at our HQ team.

Our finance director, Jo, is recognised as a trailblazer in her sector: In 2016 she was named by Financial Director as one of the “35 under 35 – Business”, in 2018 she was shortlisted for Finance Director of the Year Award 2019 at the Yorkshire Accountancy Awards, and more recently she was shortlisted for three categories in the Northern Finance Director Awards 2019, winning the One to Watch award. More importantly she also keeps John and Christian on the straight and narrow!! Jo keeps HQ going with regular trips to Temple Donuts and is at her happiest when any of the #dogsofnorth come to visit us in the office.

Bryony, Laura and Fay are based at our brewery in Leeds. Bryony had originally set out intending to be a lawyer, but found herself more and more interested in the beer industry. After working in a few different craft beer bars she ended up founding a homebrew club, before joining the brew team here at North. Laura joined North just over a year ago as part of the sales and logistics team. She caught North’s eye through her participation in PyvoFest – the UK’s first Ukrainian Beer Festival. Laura’s first date with her now husband was in North Bar (it went well!). Fay has worked for North for 5 years – she ran Alfred in Meanwood before joining the brewery as one of the very first employees. Fay is part of the management team at the brewery, heading up sales and logistics and is the reason that Seb’s brew schedule gets done! She also makes amazing jewellery and pottery – orders for earrings get placed from our friends abroad before international beer festivals!

Lowri, Hannah, Charlotte and Thea work in our taproom teams. Charlotte and Thea are massive Transmission fans and were part of our opening team at Leeds City Tap. Lowri joined us at North Bar 18 months ago as a bartender, and was quickly promoted to keyholder before transferring to Leeds City Tap as Assistant Manager. She has represented North Brewing Co at beer festivals from Newcastle to Holland, and her favourite beer is anything strong and dark! Before joining North her experience of beer was pretty much limited to pints of lager and the odd Camden Pale – she’s now discovered drinking thirds! Hannah joined North from indie favourite Arcade Beers in Huddersfield. She splits her time between Leeds City Tap and the OG taproom at the brewery. Every summer she heads up the organisational extravaganza that is Eat North and manages to keep the street food traders, families, dogs, and beer drinkers fed, suncreamed and hydrated!

Sarah and Kate work in our Marketing department in HQ. Sarah first got into craft beer by picking up a bottle of Punk IPA in Beer Ritz when buying some Father’s Day beers back in 2011. She then worked in BrewDog’s Manchester bar before spells at Brew By Numbers in London and a couple of years in Berlin. She now works as our Marketing Manager balancing beer festivals, social media strategies and working on all things creative with James at Refold. Kate joined North from our friends at Kirkstall Brewery in June 2019. She loves anything sour: From Triple Fruited Goses to the queen herself Duchesse de Borgogne. Kate bakes the best Lemon Drizzle Cake in the world (official judgement) and is also excellent (we mean really excellent) at Karaoke.

Jessica, Chloe, Ellen and Bridie work in our bars team. Jessica is the Assistant Manager at our biggest North Bar yet in Harrogate. When she’s not in Harrogate she can (more often than not) be found with a sneaky Espresso Martini in the original Leeds North Bar. Chloe is Queen of our pocket sized bar, Further North, in Chapel Allerton. She’s currently half way through a 100km trek across Jordan to raise £10k for Action Against Hunger and conquered her fear of flying to get there. An actual superhero! Ellen works in Alfred in Meanwood and is also an excellent freelance photographer (the snaps in this post are all hers). She has an exhibition up in
North Bar this month and she’s plotting an ace dog-themed project in Alfred this Spring. Bridie is the longest serving member of the North Bar family (bar John and Christian) with almost 7 years under her belt! She works as a floating keyholder providing support and training to our venues. She’s also an amazing illustrator and her desert island beer would be Duchesse de Borgogne.

North is a safe, open, inclusive place to work – and we’ve loved taking today to chat to and champion some of the ace women working in our industry. If you’d like to join the North family keep an eye on our social media feeds or drop us an email on jobs@northbar.com
