Introducing North Brewing Co pop up bottle shops!

We are now operating pop up bottle shops for all your takeaway beer needs at the following venues:

Alfred // Further North // Leeds City Tap // Preston // North Bar Harrogate // North Bar Social

Our pop up bottle shops will be open from Tuesday – Sunday– 12pm – 7pm. (North Bar Harrogate and North Bar Social Fridays and Saturdays only).

When the lockdown was announced we took the decision to close our bars completely and concentrate our efforts on establishing a home delivery service to keep our regular customers supplied with their favourite North beers in Leeds. This service was set up over night with a google form, an email address, and a very active WhatsApp group! The reaction from the local community was fantastic and has quite literally kept us in business over the past few months.

We have since taken our webshop in house and integrated our free local delivery service into the online shop. This means that we have had a little more time to look at longer term planning, and work on our ‘new normal’.

The bottle shops will be selling North cans straight from the fridge, guest beers, wine, snacks, merchandise and mini kegs. The mini kegs will be 5l (or 8.8 pints) of draught beer to dispense at home – when paired with a bag of crisps ripped open at the seam it’s almost like being sat in your local…

Keeping our staff and customers safe is our number one priority.

The bottle shops will be manned by one member of staff at a time. We will be utilising staff who have been working as part of our home deliveries team and have experience working with social distancing.

  • The bottle shops have all been fitted with Perspex screens.
  • All staff have been provided with masks and gloves.
  • We have clear signs advertising the capacity of each venue and information on social distancing.
  • Customers will be asked to queue outside the venue at 2m intervals.
  • Customers will be required to sanitise their hands before they enter – sanitiser will be provided in the doorway.
  • We will be cashless in all venues.

More independent businesses are returning to our high streets with new ways of working. Coffee machines are back on, cafes have been supplying their local communities with veg boxes, and restaurants are pivoting to takeaways. Hospitality was the first sector to be hit by the pandemic, and it will be the last to fully re-open. However, hospitality is an industry that is used to thinking on its feet and responding to challenges. Re-thinking the role of our venues in the community embodies this spirit.

What do we miss during lockdown? Face to face human contact. It’s good for the soul, it’s good for mental health. Prior to the government lockdown we took the decision to close the bars before we had to, because the image of a packed Further North was too hard to stomach as we were starting to be told to stay away from each other.

The picture is very different now – drive through North Leeds and you’ll see an orderly, spaced out queue outside several independent businesses. People aren’t naively, stubbornly or defiantly taking themselves to the pub despite warnings anymore, they are compliantly keeping those in their community safe whilst embracing a new approach to their old lives.

When dropping beer at people’s homes our delivery teams have provided a bit of human contact, with a safe wave from a driveway, or a snatched chat with a regular. The pop up bottle shops mean that people can pick up a beer or two (rather than a case) whilst taking their daily walk, and keep connected to their communities.

We have carefully considered our decision to open pop up bottle shops. With confident, well trained staff, infrastructure and excellent signage we believe that we are safely adapting to the ‘new normal’, looking after the communities that we serve, and working to protect the jobs of our employees longer term.

Our UK wide delivery service will continue via the North webshop here – and we will still be offering FREE local delivery on all orders over £20 that are within a 3 mile radius of the brewery.
