On Thursday 23rd March, four members of North Brewing Company took on a storm called Doris as we battled our way down to London for the trade session of Craft Beer Rising 2017. Unfortunately we arrived slightly later than hoped as trains don’t work very well when it’s windy, and the day seemed to end far too quickly. Nonetheless, we did our best to make the most of the 3 hours and 45 minutes we spent inside the Old Truman Brewery surrounded by people who are doing truly inspiring things with beer.
The samples which prompted the most animated discussions and head-nodding included Wild Beer Company’s “Breakfast of Champignons”, a mushroom sour that’s probably a lot of people’s worst nightmare (why would they let that stop them?) but we couldn’t get enough of it. Another fun eyebrow-raiser came in the form of the Cloudwater x Brewdog collab, which smelled and tasted like orange juice, so it was only natural that we enjoyed quite a lot of it as we hadn’t eaten since breakfast at Laynes Espresso on our way to Leeds Station that morning. We also fell madly in love with Tuatara Tiramisu Stout, which is as pleasing to drink as it is to say.
Although we probably only made it around a quarter of the stands, we did manage to hang out with our friends at Gipsy Hill Brewing Company, with whom we had giddy discussions about our imminent collaboration brew (watch this space!!) and we talked all things Beer Awards with the lovely Jessica Mason, Bill Simmonds and Adrian Tierney Jones.
Kicking out time was swift and efficient, verging on brutal… So we descended the hop-strewn staircase and headed around the corner to the Ten Bells pub for a banging after-party courtesy of Four Pure (who were sporting some of the most beautiful vintage ski suits we’ve ever seen). After a long-overdue refuel at Pizza East, we headed to Mother Kelly’s where we plotted and schemed with our friends from Verdant Brewing. Before long it became clear that the excitement of the day had got the better of us as our yawns increasingly interfered with the conversation. Sad to be leaving the party, we graciously retired to our AirBnB at a disappointingly reasonable hour.
The following day, symptoms including sore heads and mild nausea were miraculously cured by some of the best Kombucha we’ve ever tasted; the gorgeously stylish bottles of JARR kombucha that had been given to us by the kind-hearted souls at the CRATE Brewery stand are now on our must-find list for all future trips to Capital City. We enjoyed hearty Peruvian breakfasts followed by a tasty Madeira and seed cake interlude at St Johns Bread and Wine before heading back to Kings Cross for our (delayed, again) journey back to Leeds.
Huge thanks for everyone at Craft Beer Rising for an excellent day! For a mini video montage of our CBR17 adventure, head to www.instagram.com/northbrewco
We’ll be back down in London again on Thursday 2nd March for the North Brewing Co Tutored Tasting and Tap Takeover event at Mason and Company (Hackney). Fingers crossed for sunny skies and train-friendly conditions, we’d hate to be late to our own party!
