Job description

North are looking for friendly, enthusiastic people to join their Marketing and Events team this summer. You will be representing North at beer festivals across the UK, serving on the bar and acting as an ambassador for the brand. This role is perfect for a freelancer looking to take on temporary work, anyone looking to get a foot in the door of the craft beer industry, or a student looking for summer shifts.

Beer festivals are a lot of fun, but also hard work! The shifts are long and you have to bring your customer service A-game. However, the customers are enthusiastic and engaged, and you will make many friends in the UK craft beer industry.

The role involves setting up our temporary events bar, managing stock across a weekend, serving beers professionally, chatting to customers about the brand, and representing North in the best possible way at all times. North have built up a stellar reputation for hospitality over the past 25 years, so Sunday mornings see our events team arrive at the festival bright and early mixing up complimentary Bloody Marys for all the brewers at the event.

You don’t need to be an expert on craft beer – we can train you – but you do need to be passionate about food and drink. Some prior knowledge of the North brand and our products would be useful.

Below is a non-exhaustive list of your roles and responsibilities. The list is non-exhaustive, and you may be required to complete additional tasks at the discretion of your manager. We are still a small company so there are plenty of opportunities to get stuck in!

  • Setting up the event bar / Lindrs (portable beer machines) and testing them ahead of an event. The bar must be fully set up, working and look amazing at least 45 minutes before the event starts.
  • Dressing the stand or bar area with banners, bunting, plants, accessories, POS, fairy lights etc.
  • Ensuring that information on the beers is displayed clearly and correctly: From keg badges being visible to price lists to any overhead lettering being accurate.
  • Serving beer throughout the event in adherence with instructions from the event organisers. Some beer festivals operate as an ‘all in’ ticket offering tasters, others operate more like normal bars where we take payment for each drink via tokens or card machines.
  • Adhering to the responsible sale of alcohol at all times. People will often try strong beers at festivals and it is imperative that we do not serve people who have had one too many.
  • Chatting enthusiastically and knowledgably with customers about the North products on offer. A familiarity with the North core range and current specials will also be key to your success in this role.
  • Promoting the story of the North brand: From opening the UK’s first craft beer bar in Leeds in 1997 to brewing at Springwell and selling our beer across the globe in 2022.
  • Promoting North’s webshop and venues to potential new customers.
  • Keeping the bar clean at all times during service, and effectively closing the event bar over night so that the beer quality is not compromised.
  • Deep cleaning the Lindrs and any event equipment after each event. The bar will usually receive a first clean at the event, before being deep cleaned when returned to Springwell.
  • Liaising with the warehouse team on the storage of any event equipment.
  • Liaising with the marketing team on any stock returned from an event.
  • Providing detailed feedback after each event – what sold well, who did you meet, are there any sales opportunities that need following up.
  • Mixing up fantastic Bloody Marys for the brewers at every festival. North is all about hospitality and this is our way of showing it on the road!
  • Accurately recording your hours during an event, and for any subsequent cleaning / prep shifts.
  • You do not need to be a craft beer expert – we can teach you to tell the difference between hops and malts – but you do need to be passionate about food and drink.
  • We want to work with friendly and engaged individuals. The sort of people that we’d love to go for a drink with!
  • You must be responsible. You will be an ambassador for the brand at events, and must adhere to North’s festival code of conduct at all times.
  • You must be punctual, efficient and have strong time management skills.
  • You must be a team player. The shifts can be long and you will need to support your team members through working together, and covering each others’ breaks.
  • You must be available to work at weekends – the majority of the shifts will run Thursday – Sunday. The events take place across the UK so this role will often involve travel and overnight stays.
  • A UK driving license would be very useful in this role, but we will consider applicants who cannot drive.
  • 28 days annual leave (including 8 bank holidays). This is calculated on a pro-rata basis for hourly staff.
  • Access to our Wellbeing Team – they organise workshops and activities, alongside providing digital and physical resources.
  • Staff discount across all our bars and webshop.
  • Cost price sustainably sourced merchandise.
  • Access to the staff Health Cash Plan. This allows staff to claim money towards prescriptions, dental care, contact lenses etc.
  • Cycle Scheme and Tech Scheme.
  • 1 week ‘life leave’ – this is in addition to your annual leave and covers events that you might usually eat into your allowance for e.g. moving house
  • Compassionate leave, separate from your annual leave allocation
  • 2 weeks company sick pay
  • Generous parental leave
  • Training and development opportunities
  • An opportunity to work in a friendly, ambitious team at one of the UK’s leading, and fastest growing, Independent Craft Brewers.
  • The opportunity to learn about a variety of duties in a small and inclusive company. We get stuck in!
